Safety Considerations
⚠️ High Alpine Environment
Zermatt terrain is serious high-altitude mountaineering. Glacier travel, crevasse danger, altitude sickness, and extreme weather require proper skills and preparation.
- Altitude: Most routes are 3,000-4,000m+. Acclimatize properly. Altitude sickness is common above 3,500m
- Glacier Travel: Roped glacier travel essential. Hidden crevasses, seracs, and icefall hazards
- Weather: Can change rapidly at altitude. Check forecasts and turn back if needed
- Avalanche Risk: Check the SLF Swiss avalanche bulletin daily
- Rescue: Air Zermatt provides helicopter rescue but can be expensive without insurance
Best Season
Peak Season: March - May, September - November
- Winter (December-February): Very cold at altitude, short days, deep snow
- Spring (March-May): Best weather, stable snow, perfect temperatures
- Summer (June-August): Glacier skiing only, limited snow coverage, hot
- Fall (September-November): Excellent conditions, less crowds, early snow
