🏔️ Grand Combin (4,314m)
One of the great Alpine ski mountaineering objectives. Multi-day expedition starting from Cabane de Panossière or Cabane de Valsorey. Serious glacier travel, steep climbing, and technical skiing. For experienced alpinists only.
- Summit: 4,314m
- Approach: 2-3 days via mountain huts
- Difficulty: Very difficult (steep ice, crevasses)
- Season: April - June
⛷️ Mont Fort (3,328m)
Verbier's highest lift-accessed point. The cable car delivers you to 3,328m for instant access to steep couloirs and powder bowls. Classic descents include the north face couloirs and Col des Gentianes routes.
🎿 Rosablanche (3,336m)
Beautiful ski tour from Verbier or Siviez. Long skin up the glacier, spectacular summit views, and multiple descent options. Can be combined with Cabane de Prafleuri for an overnight tour.
❄️ Col de Louvie
Classic tour from Verbier crossing into the Val de Bagnes. Spectacular north-facing descent with views of Grand Combin. Can continue to Cabane de Louvie or Fionnay for multi-day tours.

Verbier is famous for steep couloirs accessed from the lift system:
- Bec des Rosses: Site of the Freeride World Tour finals (45-55° slopes)
- Col des Mines: Steep north-facing couloir, avalanche terrain
- Vallon d'Arby: Classic powder descent, long skin back
- Mont Gelé North Face: Serious commitment, steep and exposed
Mountain Huts & Multi-Day Tours
Verbier is the gateway to excellent hut-to-hut ski touring:
- Cabane de Panossière (2,641m): Base for Grand Combin, excellent location
- Cabane de Valsorey (3,030m): High hut for Grand Combin's normal route
- Cabane de Louvie (2,213m): Cozy hut in Val de Bagnes, base for touring
- Cabane de Prafleuri (2,662m): Hub for Rosablanche and surrounding peaks
- Cabane FXB Panossière (2,641m): Modern SAC hut, spectacular setting
Verbier Haute Route
Verbier is a key waypoint on the Chamonix-Zermatt Haute Route, typically Day 3 or 4:
- Standard route: Cabane du Trient → Cabane de Panossière → Verbier
- Alternative: Continue to Cabane de Prafleuri instead of descending to Verbier
- Most parties resupply in Verbier and continue toward Arolla/Zermatt
Safety Considerations
⚠️ Serious Terrain - Expert Knowledge Required
Verbier is known for steep, committing terrain with serious consequences. Many routes have mandatory air time, cliff exposure, and high avalanche danger. Hire a guide if you're not intimately familiar with the area.
- Steep Terrain: Many routes are 40-50°, some exceed 50°. Mandatory air, no-fall zones common
- Avalanche Risk: Verbier has high avalanche activity. Check SLF avalanche bulletin daily
- Glacier Travel: Grand Combin and high routes require roped glacier travel
- Crowds: Popular routes get tracked out quickly, especially on powder days
- Commitment: Many descents are point-of-no-return with long walk-outs
Best Season
- January - February: Deep powder, cold, shorter days
- March - April: Best overall conditions, stable snow, good weather
- May - June: Spring touring, corn snow, high routes still skiable
- Lift Opening: Typically mid-December through late April

- Car: 2.5 hours from Geneva
- Train: TGV to Martigny (1.5 hrs from Geneva), then bus to Verbier (45 min)
- Airport: Geneva International (closest), 160km
- Parking: Large parking areas in Le Châble (valley), take gondola to Verbier
