01How to choose a ski touring setup, in one question

*To choose a ski touring setup, answer one honest question — what do I ski, and where? — then work through the pieces in order: fit your boots first (fit is the veto, then flex, then walk-mode range of motion), pick skis by the snow you actually ski (a 90–100 mm all-round waist suits most tourers), pair tech (pin) bindings with an adjustable, certified release, add nylon or mohair-mix skins, and never leave out the safety trinity — transceiver, shovel and probe.* The rule underneath all of it: buy for the ninety percent of days you actually ski, not the highlight reel. Here is why that one question decides everything, told as two skiers in a shop.

Two skiers walk into the same shop in July with the same budget. Call the first the collector: she points at the widest, most photogenic skis on the wall — the ones that looked incredible in the powder edit — pairs them with stiff 130-flex freeride boots, and walks out feeling equipped. The second, the tourer, asks a different question: what do I ski, and where? Mostly day tours in the Alps, a few thousand vertical metres a week, spring corn as often as midwinter powder, and a body that has to still be climbing on hour three. She walks out with a 90-millimetre all-round ski, a 120-flex boot with a big walk mode, and light pin bindings.

The gap between their setups is roughly a kilogram on each foot — and over a 1,000-metre climb you lift each foot a few thousand times, so that kilo gets paid back stride after stride, all day. Come January the collector is strong on the three powder days of the month and quietly miserable on the other twenty: hauling a heavy, wide setup uphill, cooking on every climb, arriving at the top too tired to enjoy the down. The tourer climbs efficiently, transitions quickly, and skis everything in control. Same money, same shop, completely different winters. The setup you buy in July is the setup you ski all season — so buy for the ninety percent, not the highlight reel.

02Which ski touring boots should you choose first?

If you have one hour and half your budget, spend both on boots. Skis are forgiving; a ski that's slightly wrong is still fun. Boots that are wrong are a day-ruining, tour-ending, sometimes season-ending problem — cold toes, screaming shins, blisters on the skin track, no power on the descent. Boots are the interface between you and everything else, and they're the hardest thing to get right online. Buy boots in person, from someone who fits them.

Choose in this order:

1. Fit — before anything else. A touring boot should hold your heel locked with your toes just brushing the end of the liner, snug through the midfoot with no painful pressure points. The two numbers to know are last width (the shell's forefoot width — roughly 97–98 mm is low-volume, 100–101 mm is medium, 102 mm+ is high-volume) and overall volume/instep height. Match those to your actual foot, then a heat-moulded liner and a footbed fine-tune the rest. Get the shell wrong and no amount of buckle-fiddling saves you. Flex, weight and features are all irrelevant if the boot doesn't fit — so fit is the veto.

2. Flex — match it to how you ski, honestly. Flex index is the boot's forward stiffness — think of it as how hard you have to lean before the cuff gives, the difference between a firm diving board underfoot and a soft one. Softer boots (roughly 90–110) are lighter, walk better, and are plenty for most tourers on most snow. Stiffer boots (120–130+) drive a wide ski hard in difficult snow but weigh more and usually walk worse. Be honest about your level and your skis: a beginner on a 90 mm ski does not need a 130 boot, and will climb worse for buying one.

3. Cuff range of motion (walk mode). This is the touring-specific spec skiers most often ignore. When you flip the walk mechanism, how far can the cuff rotate? A big range — think 50° or more, with the best pure-touring boots around 60–70°+ — means a longer, more efficient, less fatiguing stride. To picture it: near 70° is close to a natural walking stride; 40° is a shuffling half-step that fights you every kilometre. If you climb a lot, range of motion matters more than an extra ten points of flex.

4. Weight. You lift each boot thousands of times per tour, so grams on your feet cost far more than grams in your pack. But weight trades directly against downhill stiffness and warmth — don't chase the lightest boot on the wall unless you're racing.

5. Sole and binding compatibility — check before you fall in love. Touring boots have tech-fitting inserts at toe and heel for pin bindings, and a rockered touring sole. Confirm your boot and your intended binding match (see the binding section) — a GripWalk-only alpine boot won't take pins.

Common mistake: buying boots online to save money. The saving evaporates the first time you turn around at the col with numb toes. A good bootfit is the single highest-return decision in the whole setup — pay for it.

03How to choose ski touring skis: width and weight

Everything about a touring ski comes down to a single tradeoff you get to place on a slider: light and efficient uphill, or wide and stable downhill. You cannot maximise both. Where you put the slider depends entirely on what you ski and how much the climb matters to you.

Waist width is the headline number. The waist (underfoot width in millimetres) sets float and stability in soft snow against quickness and efficiency everywhere else.

  • 80–90 mm — narrow, light, efficient. Superb on firm snow, spring corn, steep couloirs and long objectives where the climb dominates; less forgiving in deep powder. Pick these if you chase vertical and skin firm tracks.
  • 90–100 mm — the all-round heart of the sport. Enough float for most powder days, still light and nimble enough to climb and skin all day. If you ski a bit of everything and want one pair, start here. This is where most tourers should look.
  • 100–115 mm — wide, floaty, stable at speed in soft snow — the powder and freeride-touring range. Heavier, more tiring to climb, more effort to skin on a hard track. Worth it only if deep snow is genuinely your main diet.

Weight is the second number, and it's felt on every stride. A touring ski runs roughly 1,000–1,600 g per ski. Over a 1,000-metre climb you lift each ski a few thousand times, so 300 g compounds into real fatigue; lighter skis climb beautifully but can feel nervous or deflected in rough, heavy snow, while heavier skis are stable and damp on the down and punish you on the up. A useful rule: on the skin track a light ski rewards you every stride; on one rough descent a month you'll wish it were heavier.

Length (roughly between chin and forehead height depending on ability, weight and ski width) and profile (camber underfoot for grip and edge hold, tip rocker for float and forgiveness) round it out — but width and weight are the decision. Shorter skis turn and kick-turn more easily and suit lighter or newer skiers; longer skis are more stable at speed and float better in soft snow. Match the ski to your boots and ability too: a soft boot can't drive a big stiff ski, and a beginner is better served by a forgiving, moderate ski than a demanding charger.

Rule of thumb: pick your ski for the snow you ski most, not the snow you dream about. Count your real days. If eighteen of your twenty tours are on firm or variable snow, a 110 mm powder ski is the wrong tool eighteen times to be right twice.

04Tech or frame bindings: which for ski touring?

The binding is where touring's efficiency is won or lost, and it's the category with the clearest fork in the road: tech (pin) bindings versus frame bindings.

Tech / pin bindings grip your boot's metal toe inserts with two spring-loaded pins and pivot at the toe, so you lift only the boot — not the whole binding — with every step. They are far lighter: a pair of pins can run 300–600 g against 1,000–2,000+ g for a frame binding, often under half the weight, and that gap is the entire reason they win over a day of climbing. The tradeoff: they need tech-compatible boots with inserts, take a little practice to step into, and classic pin bindings release differently from an alpine binding — many older or minimalist models aren't lab-certified for release the way resort bindings are. That caveat is dating fast: a growing class of tech bindings is now ISO 13992 / TÜV release-certified. Read that certification precisely, though — it tests the binding's release function; it does not make a pin binding behave like an alpine one (there's little or no elastic travel at the toe, and the toe locks out for the climb). For dedicated touring, get tech pins — the weight and efficiency gain is enormous for all but a couple of edge cases below. If you want retention you can trust and a release you can set, choose a certified model with a real, adjustable release value — not a fixed-value race binding.

Frame bindings keep the whole binding attached to the boot and lift a hinged frame with each stride — heavier and less efficient, but they accept regular alpine boots (no inserts needed) and give a familiar, alpine-style release feel. Their niche has narrowed to skiers transitioning from resort gear who want one boot for both, or those who explicitly want alpine-binding release behaviour. For dedicated touring, most people are better served going tech.

Release value (DIN/RV): set it, don't max it. Release value governs how much force releases your boot in a fall. Have a shop set it from your weight, height, boot-sole length and skier type — not cranked up "so it never pre-releases." Too high and it won't release when it should, which is how knees get hurt; too low and you pre-release at the worst moment. On classic uncertified pin bindings, treat the numbers as approximate and let a shop set them.

Brake width — match it to your ski. If your binding has brakes, size them to your ski's waist: a brake equal to or up to about 10 mm wider than the waist (a 96 mm ski wants roughly a 100 mm brake). Too narrow won't clear the ski; too wide drags in the snow or fails to retract in tour mode.

Ski crampons — cheap insurance for firm snow. Most tech bindings accept ski crampons (couteaux): small metal teeth that clip in at the binding toe and bite into hard, icy or refrozen spring snow where skins alone start to slip. They weigh almost nothing, live in the pack until a firm morning or a steep frozen traverse demands them, and turn a sketchy icy skin-track into a secure one. Buy the pair that matches your binding and your ski's waist width when you buy the binding — it's the cheapest safety upgrade you'll make.

Weight. Bindings are a place to save real grams, but the lightest race bindings drop adjustability, brakes and release certification. Buy the lightest binding that still has the features you need.

Brakes or leashes — a real, unsettled debate. Brakes deploy when a ski releases and stop it sliding; leashes tether the ski so it can't be lost. A reasonable default is brakes for general touring and leashes for glaciers and no-fall zones, where losing your only means of descent is the bigger risk. But this is genuinely contested: a released, braked ski can still slide a long way on a slope, and in a slide a leashed ski keeps you attached to it — for better (self-arrest, no lost ski) or worse (it can drag you). Neither camp is wrong; choose for your specific terrain rather than a rule.

Weight on your feet isn't carried — it's lifted, about four thousand times per foot on a 1,000 m climb. Your all-round-plus-tech build hauls roughly 12 tonnes of boot-and-ski up that climb; a heavy freeride rig hauls closer to 16. That's why the grams that touch your feet — ski, boot, and above all tech pins over a frame binding — matter far more than the grams in your pack, which you carry only once. Buy light where the gear lifts; save the weight budget for your bag.

05Nylon or mohair skins: grip versus glide

A climbing skin is a strip of fabric that does something faintly magical: its fibres grip when you push back and glide when you slide forward, which is the only reason you can walk uphill on a ski at all. And this one unglamorous choice decides whether a steep, firm skin-track feels secure or terrifying. It comes down to plush material, adhesive type, and attachment — a grip-versus-glide-versus-durability tradeoff.

Plush material — nylon, mohair, or a mix. Nylon is synthetic: the most durable and the grippiest, but slower to glide and thirstier (it absorbs more water, so it's heavier and more prone to icing when wet) — the hard-wearing, forgiving choice that covers a sloppy skin track. Mohair is natural fibre (Angora goat): noticeably faster glide, sheds snow and water better, packs light — the difference is felt most on long flat approaches and rolling terrain, where nylon drags — but it grips less, wears faster and costs more. A mix (typically ~70/30 mohair/nylon) is the compromise most experienced tourers land on: much of mohair's glide with more of nylon's grip and life.

Adhesive — traditional glue versus adhesive-free. Hot-melt glue is strong, proven and re-gluable, but goes gummy in heat, stiff in deep cold, and glued skins ripped apart and re-stuck in a storm can be a fight. Newer adhesive-free skins (a silicone/hybrid tacky backing) handle cold and repeated stripping better and leave no residue, though they demand a clean base and their own care. Neither is strictly better — glue grips harder to the ski, adhesive-free is friendlier in cold and wind.

Attachment — tip and tail. A secure tip loop matched to your ski shape is essential; a tail clip (rather than tip-only) keeps tension so the skin doesn't peel back mid-climb — worth having on longer or steeper skins. Cut skins to your exact ski and trim the edges so a millimetre of steel shows for grip on firm traverses.

Common mistake: buying pure mohair as your first skins because it's "faster." Glide is nice; grip is safety. A skin that slips on a steep, firm track at the wrong moment is worse than a skin that's a touch slower. Build skinning skill on nylon or a mix, then chase glide once your technique is solid.

06The safety trinity: the kit you never compromise on

Everything above is a preference. This is not. If you travel in or below avalanche terrain, you carry — and know how to use — a transceiver, a shovel, and a probe. Three items, non-negotiable, every partner in the group, every time. They are a matched system for one job: finding and digging out a buried partner in the minutes that decide whether they live.

Transceiver (beacon). Buy a modern digital, three-antenna transceiver — it transmits your location and, switched to search, guides you to a buried signal. The differences between current models are refinements (multiple-burial handling, marking, range); any current three-antenna beacon is a good beacon. What matters far more than the model is practice: the beacon is a skill, not a talisman, and an unpractised searcher with the best beacon is slower than a drilled searcher with a basic one.

Shovel. A metal blade — plastic shovels shatter or bend in the dense, set-up debris of an avalanche, which is exactly when you need one. Compact, sturdy, with a shaft you can move real volume with. Digging is the slowest, most physical part of a rescue; a good shovel and the fitness to swing it both matter.

Probe. A collapsible probe 240–320 cm long to pinpoint depth and location once the beacon narrows the search, so you dig in the right spot rather than the wrong one. 240 cm is a practical minimum; 280 cm+ is the sensible default, and longer and stiffer is better for deep burials.

Why the trinity is time-critical rather than optional is a matter of numbers, not opinion: a completely buried victim's odds of survival sit around 90% if they're dug out inside the first ~10–15 minutes, then fall steeply — toward ~30% by about 35 minutes. That collapse is why companion rescue by the partners already there — not an outside team — is what saves lives. We cover exactly why in the avalanche-rescue survival curve. The equipment only works if it's on your body, it's a matched set, and you've drilled with it until a search is muscle memory.

Airbag packs — a valuable option, not a substitute. An avalanche airbag inflates to help keep you nearer the surface in a slide, and the avalanche accident data backs it up — but honestly: studies of real burials put the survival benefit at a measurable but modest ~10–11 percentage points, and only for people who'd otherwise be critically buried (a fraction fail to inflate, in use or in panic). It changes the odds of being caught; it does not make being caught safe, and it never replaces beacon-shovel-probe or, above all, the terrain choices that avoid the slide — reading slope angle, snowpack stability and the avalanche problem types is what keeps you out of a slide in the first place.

Common mistake: treating the trinity as a purchase instead of a practice. Owning a beacon is step one of many. Book an avalanche course, learn to read the avalanche bulletin, practise transceiver searches until you're fast, and rehearse with the exact partners you ski with. The gear buys you a chance; the skill cashes it in.

07Clothing: build a layering system, not an outfit

Ski touring hands you a punishing clothing problem — you climb hot enough to sweat and stand still at windy cols cold enough to shiver, often within the same hour. The answer isn't one warm jacket; it's a layering system you actively manage, adding and shedding as effort and exposure change. Get it right and you're comfortable all day on less bulk; get it wrong and you soak your base layer on the climb, then freeze in it at the top.

Synthetic belay insulation handles damp better; down is warmer for the weight in dry cold. The skill is timing: strip down before you're hot on the climb, and pile on the moment you stop before you're cold. The single biggest mistake is starting warm — you'll sweat, and wet insulation stops insulating. Start the skin track a little cold, knowing you'll warm up in minutes.

Rule of thumb: be bold, start cold. If you're comfortable standing at the trailhead, you're overdressed for the climb. Peel a layer before you start moving, not after you're already damp.

Ditch the shell before you sweat through it. Your engine is the warmth now — wear less than the thermometer says.

You don’t dress for the temperature — you dress for the temperature plus your effort. High output on the climb means wearing less than the thermometer suggests; the moment you stop, your furnace switches off and the belay puffy has to come out before you cool. Manage the layers, not the forecast.

08Putting it together: match the whole setup to you

Remember our two skiers? The gap between the collector and the tourer wasn't budget — it was one question, asked once, and repeated at every counter: match the gear to your terrain, your objectives and your budget, not to the highlight reel. A setup is a system, and the pieces should agree. A light 88 mm ski wants a light boot and light pins; a 108 mm freeride ski wants a stiffer boot and a heavier-duty binding. Mix a race binding under a powder ski, or a 130 boot on a beginner's setup, and you get the downsides of both.

Where the money goes. The article's whole thesis is "spend on boots and safety, save on the ski" — so here's what that looks like as a rough split of a complete setup's cost. Treat it as a starting anchor, not a rule:

Two honest starting points:

The first-setup / beginner package — prioritise ease, forgiveness and value. An all-round 90–98 mm ski of moderate flex, a 100–115 flex boot with a good walk mode (fitted in person), certified tech bindings with brakes, nylon or mix skins, and — never optional — a full beacon-shovel-probe kit and an avalanche course. Spend on boots and safety, save on the ski. This setup will do almost everything while you learn what you want. The rest of the kit. Three items round out a real setup and are easy to forget in the boots-skis-bindings excitement: a pair of adjustable (telescoping) poles you can shorten for the climb and lengthen for traverses; a 25–35 L touring pack with dedicated shovel-and-probe pockets and a diagonal ski carry; and a helmet, worn up and down. The experienced / specific package — now you know your terrain, so specialise. Efficiency-first tourers go narrower, lighter, mohair-mixed and pare grams everywhere sensible; powder-focused skiers go wider and stiffer and accept the weight. Buy for the diet you've measured over real seasons.

How do I choose ski touring skis?+

Match the waist width to the snow you ski most. 80–90 mm is light and efficient for firm snow, spring and long objectives; 90–100 mm is the all-round sweet spot for a skier who does a bit of everything and wants one pair; 100–115 mm is for powder and freeride but climbs heavier and slower. Count your real days: most tourers are best served in the 90–100 mm range.

Are tech or frame bindings better for ski touring?+

How much should a ski touring setup cost, and how do I split the budget?+

Weight it toward boots and safety. A rough split of a complete setup is boots ~30–35%, the beacon-shovel-probe kit ~15–20%, bindings ~15%, skins ~10%, and skis ~20–25%. A good bootfit is the highest-return decision, and the safety trinity plus an avalanche course are non-negotiable. Skis are the most forgiving place to save — a moderate all-round ski serves beginners better than a pricey specialist one anyway.

What length ski touring skis should I get?+

As a rough guide, stand the ski on its tail: for an all-round touring ski, the tip should land somewhere between your chin and your forehead. Go shorter (chin height) if you are lighter, newer, or want easy kick-turns and quick handling; go longer (forehead height) if you are heavier, ski fast, or want more float and stability in soft snow. Wider powder skis are usually sized a touch longer, narrow skimo skis a touch shorter. When in doubt while you are learning, err shorter — a ski you can turn is more fun than one you cannot.

Do I need ski crampons for ski touring?+

Not on every tour, but they belong in the kit. Can I use my alpine (resort) boots for ski touring?+

Only with a frame binding, and it is a compromise. Alpine boots have no tech-fitting inserts, so they will not work with light pin bindings — you would need a heavier frame binding — and they have little or no walk mode, so climbing is stiff and inefficient. For the occasional resort-access lap it can work, but for real touring a proper touring boot with inserts and a big walk mode transforms the climb.
